| Day 1, HELSINKI: Arrive Helsinki and check in your hotel, located in the very heart of Helsinki, only steps away from the main sights, shopping and restaurants. Hotel: Sokos Presidentti Day 2, HELSINKI-IMATRA: Depart by coach to Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland, famous for its charming old warehouses, cobblestone lanes, handicraft shops and the medieval cathedral. After lunch at Ruotsinpyhtaa ironworks village you will continue to Langinkoski rapids, where you will see the imperial fishing lodge that Czar Alexander III had built on the shore of the roaring rapids. Hotel: Rantasipi Valtionhotelli B/L/D Day 3, IMATRA-LIEKSA: Drive through green forests along pristine lakes on the beautiful Punkaharju esker ridge and stop at Retretti Art Exhibition featuring classical and contemporary collections. After lunch you head to Savonlinna and visit Olavinlinna Castle, the venue of the annual Savonlinna Opera Festival. In the afternoon you will visit the eastern orthodox monastery Valamo in Heinavesi before continuing to Koli Hills, Finland's best known spot of natural beauty. From the highest hilltop there is a spectacular view over forests and lakes. Hotel: Sokos Koli B/L/D Day 4, LIEKSA-JOENSUU-LIEKSA: Full day excursion to the Karelian country side. Visit in a local farmhouse, experience the friendly hospitality that Karelians are famous for. Listen to the music played by Kantele, the Finnish folk music instrument and visit exhibitions of local arts and crafts. For lunch Karelian specialities served in a typical decorated log house. Hotel: Sokos Koli B/L/D Day 5, LIEKSA-KUHMO: On the way to Kuhmo, we pay a visit to the workshop of wood sculptor Eeva Ryynanen. The coach continues due north as we follow the Russian border. You have a chance to shoot the rapids on a long wooden riverboat, steered by local fisherman. After lunch by a crackling fire, the tour proceeds to Kalevala village where the ancient poems of Finland's national epic, Kalevala, were collected. Hotel: Hotel Kalevala B/L/D Day 6, KUHMO-KUUSAMO: Your private coach continues north through the North-Karelian landscape of hills, lakes and lush green meadows which change to steep cliffs, streams, and wild forests. Lunch enroute. In Kuusamo, stop to admire astoundingly beautiful canyon lake Julma Olkky. Hotel: Spa Hotel Kuusamon Tropiikki B/L/D Day 7, KUUSAMO-ROVANIEMI: After breakfast it is time to fish on Lake Kitka before continuing to Rovaniemi. We drive due north and cross the Arctic Circle on the way to Santa's Workshop. We make a special stop at the Post Office where you can send off Santa mail with the unique Rovaniemi stamp. A special farewell to Lapland Dinner is served this evening. Hotel: Rantasipi Pohjanhovi B/L/D Day 8, ROVANIEMI-HELSINKI: You can continue exploring Lapland by joining the Extension to North Cape Tour which starts today. Otherwise, transfer to the airport and fly back to Helsinki (flight not included in price). B |
