Day 1, OSLO-SPITSBERGEN: Arrive in Svalbard, situated 400 miles north of the North Cape. The islands of Svalbard, the largest of which is Spitsbergen, have officially been part of Norway only since 1920. The island group might have remained a wilderness, with only occasional visitors, if coal had not been discovered here late in the 19th century. The capital Longyearbyen Longyear City - is 90 minutes by air from Tromsø. Named for an American, John Monroe Longyear, who established a mining operation here in 1906, the "settlement" is home to only about 1,500 Norwegians. Hotel: Radisson SAS Spitsbergen Day 2, EXCURSION TO BARENTSBURG: Today offers a full day boat trip to the Russian mining community Barentsburg. You will pass the bird cliff sanctuary's Fuglefjellene and deserted dwellings in Coles Bay. After a guided walking tour of Barentsburg, you will have time to explore the town on your own and perhaps do some shopping. The return journey crosses the Isfjord to the mighty Esmark Glacier. Hot lunch on board. In the winter, this day excursion is with snowmobile. Hotel: Radisson SAS Spitsbergen * B/L Day 3, SPITSBERGEN: Longyearbyen is the gateway to your Arctic Adventure. Here you can explore both the beautiful nature in the more civilized part of Svalbard as well as the exciting history by visiting historical places and the Svalbard Museum. The Arctic Flora and Fauna are different from anywhere else in the world, and animal life with polar bears, polar foxes, walruses, seals and whales make this an interesting place for nature lovers. Excursions differ from summer to winter and extreme sports are in abundance here; polar bear safaris on snowmobiles, cave climbing and Eskimo canoeing among icebergs. Hotel: Radisson SAS Spitsbergen * B Day 4, SPITSBERGEN: Another full day to explore the islands of Svalbard. We can recommend a hike in the valley of Bjørndalen, or perhaps a trip in a sturdy Zodiac rubber boat. A tour, which is a "must" when visiting Longyearbyen, is Mine 3 - in the footsteps of the miners. Mine 3 was the last mine on Svalbard where coal was mined by hand at low heights. Hotel: Radisson SAS Spitsbergen * B Day 5, SPITSBERGEN-OSLO: Time to bid The Arctic farewell. Please contact Passage Tours for air fare to Spitsbergen * B |
